Helen Chadwick A Singing Creative 3-5 April 2020

For singers who love Helen’s songs and performances and who would like to be a part of the creative process from the inside.

In her performance world, Helen has a continually developing inner circle of singers and actors whom she develops and performs concerts and song theatre with.  Now she would like to create an outer circle, a loose and ever-changing group of skilled and open-hearted singers who would like to sing songs in the making which may later be performed in concerts, recordings and song theatre. Helen loves to do some of the composition work with singers in person rather than alone at the piano, so as to try out ideas and see how to develop them with a live experience. Sometimes that is an evening at her house, this time it’s this weekend at Hill Cottage.

We will be a group of people who adore singing. Singers with a background in performance, dance or theatre are also welcome.

Helen will arrive with new song ideas which she will develop with us during the weekend. At the end of the weekend we will link the songs together into an order, however unfinished the songs are. Perhaps we can think about how they are placed in the space, in order to get some sense of the whole of what has been created and to see where the songs’ next journey might be.

There is no need to read music, only to hold a part on your own and sing in tune. We will sometimes use optional scores as guides, other times we will be learning by ear.

Group size 12 to 16.

Helen’s songs are uplifting with beautiful harmonies and inspiring lyrics. She loves to set great poetry, and her albums and performances are full of these songs. Her workshops are focused and fun, challenging without pressure, joyful and committed, empowering and relaxed. She has been leading choirs and singing workshops for over 30 years and has written around 400 songs for theatre, concerts and community singing events.

“to sing her haunting melodies, taught by her, is an unforgettable and moving experience… her vast body of work…and her beautiful voice provide a strong creative ground for any singer to grow and thrive”

Solo song theatre performances have toured to Denmark, the UK, Brazil, France, Argentina, Italy and her group song theatre shows based on testimonies and interviews are created with Olivier Award winning Steven Hoggett: DALSTON SONGS, WAR CORRESPONDENTS, and TRUTH.

She has also created site specific song theatre for Greenwich and Salisbury festivals and the Paul Hamlyn Hall at the Royal Opera House with choreographer Liam Steel involving soloists and a community choir. She has been commissioned to create songs or song performances by English Touring Opera, the BBC, the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre.

Helen has recorded ten albums.
