Colette Power and Maya Simson: Radically Human Retreat ‘Seeing Through’ 3-8 July 2021

We are not our beliefs

We are not our social conditioning

We are not our history

We are an extraordinary and beautiful intelligence

We are pure, vast awareness

The illusion of self limits our human potential and leads to suffering. Having built a sense of self we then cling to the belief that we are separate, separate to ‘other’ people, separate to other creatures and separate to the world around us. Separation leads to othering which leads to harm.Ultimately, we separate from our true nature as unique expressions of a vast, interconnected intelligence. We then spend our lives trying to find our way back to feeling connected.

Our aim on this retreat is to build a warm, safe, and loving community to support us as we make our way back to trust, connection and clear seeing. The retreat offers a variety of ways to explore seeing through self, freeing ourselves of limiting beliefs, and realising the greater possibilities of what it means to be human.

The Retreat Team

Colette Power PhD is a mindfulness and self-compassion teacher, trainer and supervisor. She teaches on mindfulness and compassion-based training and silent retreats in the UK and Europe. For the last three years Colette has been guided in insight practices focusing on direct experience and the nature of self (www.colettepower.com). Colette guides people through the first 3 fetters through the global forum Liberation Unleashed.

Maya Simson

Maya has been meditating for 35 years. She is trained in kundalini yoga and Tai Chi. Maya spent 12 years practicing within the zen tradition and later was ordained within the Triratna buddhist movement. She spent the last 6 years living in and managing retreats centres in Sweden and Spain. In her personal practice Maya combines aspects of Qi gong, yoga and mindful-movement. For the last three years Maya has been guided by Christiane Michelberger exploring insight practices, focusing on direct experience and the nature of self. Maya is now guiding people through the 10 Fetters Inquiry.

What to expect

This five-day retreat offers space to examine the raw materials for transformation – our direct experience. We’ll be drawing upon mindfulness and compassion practices which will enable us to look beyond the layers of armour, story and habit, to what has always been there – our original goodness, wisdom, strength, creativity, courage and joy. We will be looking more closely at self and group-based inquiry enabling us to see more clearly how we create unnecessary suffering through perception and through the creation of self. During the retreat there will be meditation instruction, movement and teachings.

There will be opportunities to meet in small groups and for personal interviews with the teachers. Outside of these times, the retreat will remain largely in silence. This spacious week-long format includes opportunities to connect with the natural environment, walking and relaxing in the beautiful Welsh countryside and swimming in the retreat centre’s natural swimming pool.

Who is the retreat for?

This retreat is appropriate for people who have had some experience of mindfulness or meditation practice and also for more experienced practitioners. Please get in touch if you are unsure whether this retreat is right for you.

This 5-day teacher led retreat meets the annual retreat CPD requirement.

The Venue

As well as the work we do it is also important where we do that work. We consider that it’s important which projects and businesses we support. Hill Cottage is a small retreat centre run by Jeremy and Zarine. The ethos of the retreat centre is founded on the belief that it is important to work equally for the  benefit of self and others. Jeremy and Zarine’s aim is to make a contribution to the collective well-being of society by:

Living more sustainably – by supporting the use of renewable energy and organic agriculture to help to maintain the health of our environment

Connecting with a peaceful natural environment which can help us rediscover our own unique path to well-being

Providing opportunities to share aspects of living in a simple way in a place where we can reflect, relax, be creative and playful.

We want to support you. We want to support the environment on which we all depend and we want to support a kinder and simpler way of living.

About the Retreat Centre
Hill Cottage Retreat Centre is situated in the Marches of mid-Wales, near Knighton, just into Wales, in Powys. The retreat centre offers space for reflection, creativity and interaction with others and the environment in mutually beneficial ways. The centre welcomes people from a wide range of philosophical and professional perspectives for workshops, courses and retreats. Set in ten acres of land, the centre includes a young orchard and woodland, a natural swimming pond, gardens for contemplation, and wildflower pastures bordered by a meandering brook. The Centre, which welcomes individuals and groups from a broad spectrum of philosophies and professional disciplines, is run on principles of sustainability and mutuality.

Accommodation is provided within a number of carefully designed barns. There is a range of single and shared accommodation (2 people) spread across the barns. There is also a small number of sleeping spaces available in traditional style ‘crog lofts’. The crog lofts are comfortable and spacious rooms built into the roof of the barns. They are accessed by ladder-stairs and are therefore not best suited for people with limited mobility. Bedding, bed linen and towels are provided. Toilet and shower are shared and there are in addition kitchens and sitting room areas. Vegetarian and vegan meals are prepared on site using fresh local ingredients.

Food

The food, in keeping with the ethos of the retreat, is simple but nourishing. We will provide a simple breakfast of porridge. There will be a vegan/vegetarian main meal at lunchtime. Teas, coffee and soft drinks will be available during the day and light refreshments in the evening.
