Songs for the Way Home, composed by Helen Chadwick, is a powerful, funny and touching piece of song theatre by this female trio. It is an adaptation of Dalston Songs which was originally commissioned by and performed at the Royal Opera House. It is a unique blend of stunning harmony songs, body percussion and witty choreography about the meaning of home.
It is inspired by interviews with Helen’s neighbours in her local community of Dalston, East London, where many different cultures co-exist. For some home meant life in a new country, escape from a war zone or arrival from a destroyed homeland, for others the tales were more domestic. It tells stories in song around ideas of roots, displacement, and belonging.
Helen Chadwick Song Theatre has performed at the Royal Opera House, for Amnesty International’s and Peace Brigades International’s birthday celebrations, as well as international festivals in Europe and Latin America.
Helen is also the founder, with Thames Festival, of the mass choir charity project Sing for Water. It has raised over £800,000 for water projects at WaterAid, through projects lead by choir leaders all over the UK, Europe and Australia. So any profit will go to this charity.
